Employment
Who I am
I'm an adventurous, seat of my pants, outgoing outdoors person. I talk to strangers, try things I'm not good at and just generally take things as they come. I also have a strong propensity to travel, which may be due to growing up as an Air force brat. I also have somewhat liberal views due to my exposure to the military.
Knowing how to do things fascinates me. I can turn combed wool into a sweater with a knife and the right pieces of wood out of the forest. I know how to dye things, and regularly snack on plants while out on walks. I very much hope to get to the point where I could make everything I use in day to day life. I'm not sure if I'd choose to, but having that knowledge base is something that drives me.
Hobbies
- Instruments: Enjoy singing and may have finally gotten to a level that isn't painful for my audience. Currently also dabbling in guitar and penny whistle.
- Sports I enjoy and am good at: hiking/backpacking. I finished King County Search and Rescue training in May 2009.
- Sports I enjoy and am okay at: lake kayaking, soccer, canoeing, street biking, climbing
- Specific sports I'd like to learn: white water kayaking, spelunking.
- Other activities I enjoy and am good at: spinning, knitting, basic wood re-finishing, home renovation (building walls, hanging dry wall, etc), dog training.
- Other activities I'd like to learn more about: natural dyes, weaving, cooking Indian food, tanning hides, preserving meat, emergency medical care
What am I doing with my life?
- Right now I'm finishing up working on a small scale farm in Northern Virginia. Learning more about small scale agriculture has been one of my stronger interests for the past five years and this summer seemed like a great time to explore it further.
- This winter I'll be moving to San Francisco to live with Brewer and work a full time job as a software engineer. I hope to gain more medical training, learn to sail and possibly join a SAR unit in the bay area.
- I'd like to hike the other half of the Appalachian Trail eventually, though that probably won't be for a few years. Being a back country ranger for a summer would also be interesting at some point.
- I'm interested in becoming more practical with a lot of the book knowledge I have. Learning to actually bow hunt, tan hides, and start bow fires is near the top of the list. I also plan to keep a productive garden in San Francisco.
