Employment
Who I am
My name is Matthew Brewer, and I live in a hollow tree... wait,
that's a children's book.
Alright, so I am a happy, straight forward, 100% blunt, 100% honest, hopeless
romantic, layed back, energetic, bouncy, adventurous, always interested, fairly
charismatic "nice guy" who gets along with most people. That is, I'm a sociable
outdoorsy computer nerd. I grew up on a small semi-working farm in western
Massachusetts as the child of two academic hippies, and it rubbed off (hippie
does not imply drugs).
I like to be able to do everything with a reasonable level of competence. I
carry everything I need for most activities in my backpack at all times, and
people tell me I always look like I'm about to go on a hike.
Hobbies
- Instruments: guitar and vocals, both of many styles (and wouldn't mind a band/choir). I also dabble in bamboo flute and penny whistle. Check out our tab here .
- Sports I enjoy and am "good" at: ultimate, hiking/backpacking, running, cubing, mountain biking, street biking, climbing
- Sports I enjoy and am okay at: spelunking, repelling, whitewater kayaking,
canoeing, archery, soccer, snowboarding
- Specific sports I'd like to learn: parkour, ocean kayaking
- Computer stuff: Writing quick code, admin'ing my own systems, designing new and better kernels, systems, and programming languages, exploring anonymity and security (what if the government were after you?), running This site
- Puzzle solving: MIT mystery hunt and that sort of thing
- Other activities: urban exploration, clubbing (baby seals?), gaming, "making", wandering, climbing trees, reading, and just about anything else
- Ongoing Experiments: minimizing clothing, minimizing number of soaps for cleaning, living without chairs at home, carrying minimal but sufficient supplies in my backpack for as many activities/eventualities as possible. Working a "real job" :D
- Lately I've been getting more and more interested in learning to do things
in the most basic way possible. Something like wilderness "survival" skills as
well as homesteading type stuff, but I'm more interested in it as living skills.
Social Networking
I got to toying with various social networking sites at one point. So here are my ID's on each (where applicable). Most of these are linked to my E'mail if you post, message me, or whatever their system supports.
If you actually visit these you may notice that I use the same photo everywhere. Why? Because I don't have that many of me, that's all.
What am I doing with my life?
- At the moment I'm trying the "real" world as it's called. It's a lot of fun so far. I can't wait to escape to the woods though.
- I hiked 1500 miles of the Appalachian trail this summer. I backpack whenever I can. I play a lot of Frisbee, rock climb, and other such things. Recently I've been getting into Parkour.
- I play guitar and sing, and would like to form up a band again, as well as
an a Capella group. I've found some people to play with regularly again, which
is awesome.
- At some point I'd like to go back to school and get a PhD in computer
science, particular operating systems and type theory. I have a lot of ideas in
those fields that I'd like to follow through on. I'm still unsure if the degree
will actually help though.
- I also always want to live on a self sufficient farm, or maybe just in the
woods without the farm. When I was little I read this book over and over again
on how to build a log cabin with just an ax. I've been reading a lot more about
this stuff recently. I'm pretty sure I could do it, and hope to some day.
- I try to share knowledge and more than anything encourage people to think
about things. That's why Boxxen.org exists.
Dating
I'm dating an Dating stuff
Beliefs
These are my unfounded beliefs. You probably don't care, and you probably shouldn't. It's not relevant to much of anything. Though I guess that in and of itself may be interesting.

Philosophy
A bit more about me (and this site)
If you hadn't noticed I'm a very open person. Ask me anything and I will answer
frankly (or even if your name isn't Frankly). Excepting where someone else has
asked me not to divulge info I will tell just about anyone just about anything
if they ask. My apologies if this bothers you. I consider surfing my site to be
asking, if you don't want the info, don't read that page.
